St. Malo Wildlife Management Area
St. Malo, Manitoba, Canada
St. Malo's Wildlife Management Area is Manitoba's first cooperative wildlife management area, with the St. Malo and District Wildlife Association playing a lead role in its acquisition and management. Consisting of two parcels, the topography of the area is flat to gently rolling terrain, well covered by aspen-oak forest. It provides habitat for white-tailed deer and ruffed grouse, and is important for neo-tropical birds as well. In Spring & Summer, the WMA attracts many birdwatchers because of its diversity of songbirds.

Though relatively small in size, the St. Malo Wildlife Management Area is a major advance in Manitoba's overall habitat preservation program. St. Malo was the first land identified and purchased by private citizens for a wildlife management area.
The 90 hectare St. Malo WMA was established in 1979 in response to a request from the St. Malo & District Wildlife Association. After securing the lands, the association leased them to Manitoba Natural Resources for long-term wildlife management. As a result of the association's foresight, dedication and hard work, the St. Malo Wildlife Management Area continues to support a variety of animals common to the district while providing nature enthusiasts with an unspoiled site for outdoor recreation.
The St. Malo Management Committee, in cooperation with the Wildlife Branch, has undertaken several activities to enhance the attractiveness of the area for wildlife. Forage plots have been planted for deer and clearings made in mature stands of trees. Watering sites have also been established, along with walking trails for visitors.
