Dan Di Alpacas

St. Malo, Manitoba, R0A 1T0

The Alpaca is a hardy animal, perfect for our climate and very easy to keep. They do quite well on small acreages (7 per acre) eating all sorts of grasses and supplemented with some grain. We mustn't forget to mention that they are absolutely adorable and very kid friendly. Alpaca wool is warmer, softer and stronger than sheep wool and as it does not contain any lanolin (a naturally occurring oil found in sheep wool) many people who cant wear wool due to their sensitivity to lanolin can enjoy wearing alpaca. It also has the added benefit of 22 natural colours and the white wool can also be dyed.

Dan Di Alpacas began in Feb 2002 with the purchase of our first 2 females and a gelding. We raise double registered Huacaya (wa-ka-ya) Alpacas for re-sale as well as for their wool. As I am also a hand spinner and a knitter, there are always a variety of wool products available for sale, including rovings (for spinning), handspun yarns and finished products. We have come to really enjoy these unique creatures and we would recommend them to anyone. And for those who may be sceptical and view them as exotics or the newest fad, well they are only new to us. Alpacas are one of the oldest domesticated species on the planet, having been developed over 6000 years ago by the Inca in South America and to this day remain pivotal in the economies of Peru, Chile and Bolivia.

If ever you are in the area please fell free to drop us a line. We're always happy to introduce people to these incredible creatures. See you soon.
